What Is FOC? A Beginner’s Guide to Comic Book Preorders
Found an upcoming comic you want, but aren’t sure what “FOC” means? Final Order Cutoff is an important part of buying new comics. Knowing the deadline helps you plan your preorders, choose the right cover, and avoid waiting until release day to look for a book.
At Patrick’s Comics & Cards, our comics collection and FOC preorder section make it easy to explore upcoming releases alongside available comics.
What does FOC mean in comics?
FOC stands for Final Order Cutoff: the deadline for retailers to finalize orders for a particular upcoming comic. For shoppers, it’s a useful reminder to choose the books they want before the shop submits its final order.
The FOC date and release date are different. FOC is an ordering deadline; the release date is when the publisher expects the comic to go on sale. Check both dates on the listing so you understand when you need to order and when the book is expected.
Why preorder comics before the deadline?
Preordering gives your comic shop a clearer picture of what readers want. It also lets you plan a series ahead of time rather than relying on whatever copies remain after release.
If you follow a particular character, writer, or cover artist, review upcoming listings regularly. A quick weekly check can help you spot the next issue, a new series, or a cover you’d like to add to your collection. Choose books you’ll enjoy reading or displaying; future resale value is never guaranteed.
How to choose the right comic and cover
- Check the issue number. Make sure it’s the next installment you want or the starting point you intended to buy.
- Read the full title. Similar titles and relaunches can make two different series look alike.
- Confirm the cover. A variant is an alternate cover edition. Match the cover artist and listing description to the edition you want.
- Review the price and format. A single issue, collected edition, and special edition may have different prices and release schedules.
- Note the deadline and expected release. Give yourself time to ask questions before ordering.
Some incentive variants have retailer ordering requirements. Availability can differ from standard covers, so don’t assume every pictured variant can be ordered. Publisher artwork and release schedules may also change.
